What Is Bubble Wrap? A Complete Guide for Malaysian Businesses

Key facts

  • Bubble wrap is a plastic film, usually polyethylene, with pockets of trapped air.
  • The air bubbles cushion impact and help stop scratches and scuffs.
  • Main choices: single layer or double layer, and transparent or black.
  • All our rolls are 100 m long, in widths from 0.2 m to 1 m.
  • Made locally by IAM Worldwide Sdn Bhd in Klang, Selangor.

Bubble wrap is one of the most familiar packaging materials in the world, and for good reason. It is light, flexible, easy to cut and quick to use, and it does a very good job of keeping products safe on the way to your customer.

This guide explains what bubble wrap actually is, how it protects your goods, which types are available and how Malaysian businesses can choose the right roll without overspending.

What bubble wrap is made of

Bubble wrap is a plastic film, usually made from polyethylene, with rows of small air pockets sealed into it. Those trapped air bubbles are the whole point. Each one acts like a tiny cushion that squashes slightly when something presses on it, then springs back.

Because it is mostly air, bubble wrap adds very little weight to a parcel. That matters when you are paying to ship hundreds of orders a month, and it also makes rolls easy to handle on a busy packing table.

The film itself is also smooth and clean, so it can sit directly against most products without leaving marks. That makes it a natural first layer for glassware, electronics, cosmetics, framed items, machine parts and many other goods.

How bubble wrap protects your products

Bubble wrap protects items in three main ways: it absorbs knocks, it stops surfaces rubbing against each other, and it fills some of the empty space inside a box.

  • Impact cushioning. When a parcel is dropped or bumped, the air bubbles compress and soften the shock before it reaches the item.
  • Surface protection. A layer of film between products, or between a product and the carton wall, helps prevent scratches, scuffs and chips.
  • Void fill. Extra wrapping or loosely scrunched bubble wrap reduces movement inside the box, so items are less likely to slide and knock together.
  • Light moisture barrier. The plastic film helps keep dust and light moisture off the surface of an item during storage and transport.

Bubble wrap works best as part of a system. A good-quality carton box, enough layers of wrap, and a well-sealed parcel will always perform better than any one of those on its own.

The main types of bubble wrap

For most businesses, the choice comes down to two questions: how much cushioning do you need, and do you want customers and handlers to see what is inside?

TypeWhat it is best for
Transparent single layerOur lowest-cost option. Lightweight cushioning and surface protection for general packaging, with easy product identification.
Transparent double layerEnhanced protection with stronger cushioning and shock absorption for fragile and higher-value products.
Black bubble wrapOpaque film that hides the contents for privacy and security. Available in single or double layer.

Who uses bubble wrap in Malaysia

Almost any business that stores or ships physical goods can use bubble wrap. Some of the most common users are:

  • E-commerce sellers packing orders for delivery to customers across the country.
  • Warehouses and distributors protecting stock in storage and during transfer between locations.
  • Factories and manufacturers wrapping components, finished goods and parts with delicate surfaces.
  • Retail shops wrapping fragile items at the counter or for delivery.
  • Movers and households protecting furniture, glassware, mirrors and electronics during a move.

Each of these users has slightly different priorities. An online seller may care most about cost per parcel and a tidy unboxing, while a factory may care more about protecting a finished surface or keeping parts from rubbing together.

How to choose the right bubble wrap

A few simple questions will point you to the right product:

  1. How fragile is the item? Sturdy goods that just need protection from scratches usually do well with single layer. Glass, ceramics, electronics and higher-value items are better suited to double layer.
  2. Does privacy matter? If you ship high-value or confidential items, or simply prefer that the contents are not visible, black bubble wrap conceals what is inside.
  3. What size are your products? Narrow rolls suit small items and quick wrapping at a packing station. Wider rolls suit large items, bulk wrapping and cutting to custom sizes.
  4. How much do you use? All our rolls are 100 m long, so heavy users can keep a steady supply and avoid running out mid-shift.

Our guide to bubble wrap roll sizes explains the available widths in more detail, and how to wrap fragile items covers the wrapping technique itself.

Simple tips for using bubble wrap well

  • Wrap every fragile item individually, rather than bundling several together.
  • Use enough layers so the item cannot be felt through the wrap when you press lightly.
  • Tape the wrap closed so it does not unwind inside the box.
  • Fill empty space in the carton so nothing can shift.
  • Pick a box that leaves room for cushioning on all sides.

When you are finished with it, bubble wrap can often be reused for your own outgoing parcels or for storage. If you need to dispose of it, check with your local recycler whether they accept plastic film.
